An agriculturist (UP Los Baños, BSA major in Ag Edu) and son of a farmer myself, I never had any healthy respect for moths. To me, moths are there to bother you when you don’t need them, such as when you are eating or reading. Not anymore for me; not after waking up at about 3 AM today, Monday, 10 April 2023, Manila – suddenly, I had moths in my mind! Let me now enumerate some of them.
Measure of the Hour
(MOTH): This is the MOTH for farmers and others in farming communities who hope
to solve Farmer Poverty and resolve Climate Change: Their practice of Organic
Agriculture (OA) is the solution that will give them the resolution.
Mixture of the Hour (MOTH):
Regenerative Agriculture (RA) is the single package of means &
methods & measures in farming and gardening that can help much in solving
Farmer Poverty and resolving Climate Change that have been brought about by
Chemical Agriculture (CA). Economics: RA costs very much less than CA;
therefore, Farmer Prosperity is assured! And, simultaneously, since OA does not
produce greenhouse gases (GHGs) like CA does, OA helps resolve Climate Change!
Man of the Hour
(MOTH): As interim Secretary of Agriculture, President Ferdinand “BBM” Marcos Jr is spending not even 50% of
his time on the Twin Problems of Farmer Poverty and Climate Change – 2 urgent
problems of the time. But in fact, we need more than a Man of the Hour; we need
a man with a modern assembly of mental and methodical and mechanical means to
solve those twin problems.
Mind of the Hour
(MOTH): We Filipinos need to reboot the Secretary of Agriculture – he must not
only give his 100% attention to agriculture but give his 200% or even more! And
this MOTH must have a Modern Open Trunk of Helps (MOTH). I have no other mind
in mind than William Dollente Dar,
the poor boy from Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur. [Historical note: The “Santa Maria”
was the flagship of Columbus, the
one who in 1492 opened the seas to Christian missionaries working in America
and Asia. (Collins Dictionary, collinsdictionary.com)].
Tada!
Actually, Columbus’ was an accidental discovery of
the Americas – in Mr Dar’s case, it was a mindset. When he became Director
General (DG) of the International Crops
Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in 2000, ICRISAT was
dead last; that old situation called for a new paradigm: Servant Leadership; with that, he
brought ICRISAT up to preeminent position among the international agricultural
research agencies that are members of the CGIAR. Our servant leader is an
authentic achiever internationally!

In
fact, Mr Dar is my Merrymaker of the Hour (MOTH) – He is celebrating his 70th
birthday today, Monday, 10 April 2023.
My
felicitation today is contained in the message above on the image of the moth
from imgflip.com; the tagline says, “You have been visited by a
fluffy moth, she hopes you have a wonderful day!”@517
